Scattered light inside an opacifying lens overstimulates retinal cells, leading to photophobia or heightened glare sensitivity. Bright morning sunshine, reflective wet pavement, or harsh fluorescent lighting in commercial stores can cause physical discomfort and involuntary squinting. When standard indoor lighting feels excessively harsh, your eyes are signaling that internal light diffusion is occurring.
