
5. Swelling in Your Lower Legs, Ankles, or Feet
Peripheral edema occurs when inefficient cardiac pumping allows blood and fluid to pool in your lower extremities. You may notice your shoes suddenly feeling tight or deep sock impressions lingering on your skin.
While prolonged sitting or high sodium meals can cause transient puffiness, persistent bilateral swelling points toward systemic circulatory strain. Your kidneys also retain sodium and water when cardiac output falls, compounding the fluid retention.
