Are you struggling with rapid weight gain? Check out the main reasons NOW!

Short-term weight fluctuations of 5 to 6 pounds within a 3-day period are not a big deal. This is something normal that can happen to anyone, but if you are experiencing sudden weight gain out of nowhere, this is when things can seem a little bit strange.

Maybe you think that you haven’t made any lifestyle or dietary changes, and this weight gain is not normal. Indeed, if no changes were made, this is not something that should happen, and there are a few reasons that can explain what’s going on.

Read on and discover the main causes of rapid weight gain and other symptoms that may appear and concern you.

1. Quitting smoking

This is a classic cause of unexplained weight gain, and probably many of you already know about it. It’s also one of the common reasons people are afraid to quit smoking. They are concerned that if they do it, they will gain weight. If you were told that this is just a myth, oh, well, it’s not, and it’s all caused by the nicotine that is found in tobacco products.

But why is this happening? Nicotine is known to increase the metabolism, which means you will consume more calories than usual. It also reduces the appetite. Once someone stops smoking, they will probably be more hungry than they are used to because things are getting back to normal. As a result, they might eat more, and this is how the weight gain is explained.

A meta-analysis was conducted in 2015, and according to it, the average weight increase after quitting smoking is 4.1 kg over the course of five years. But there is no set rule. This differs from person to person, and another study shows that 65% of those who quit smoking managed to gain less than 5% of their body weight.

2. Medication

If you take medication, you should know that some medications contribute to weight gain. Most of the time this is a problem for those who take more medication than average because more pills mean higher chances to have one that increases your weight.

This can happen in more ways, from causing fatigue that leads to a less active life to increasing the appetite, eating more, and then gaining weight.

There is a large list of medications that can have this effect, but the main ones are steroids, insulin, beta-blockers, sleeping pills, and antidepressants. If you gained a few pounds lately and you have a prescription for any of these medications, this might be the explanation.

Hopefully, you don’t need to stop taking your prescription. There are medications out there that can treat the same issue without causing the same effects. This means you should go to your doctor and tell them about the unpleasant effects, and they will change your prescription with something more suitable that won’t cause problems anymore.

3. Kidney problems

Sudden weight gain? Do you have any other symptoms? Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet? If this is the case, you should know that these are clear signs of kidney disease. Nephrotic syndrome or kidney failure can both be the cause, and you should seek medical help as soon as possible.

Your kidneys are the ones responsible for filtering all the waste products from your blood, and if they suffer damage, this means they are not able anymore to do their job properly. As a result, your body can have a hard time excreting fluids, and this can lead to a liquid buildup.

Some other symptoms that can indicate you have a kidney problem are muscle cramps, fatigue, loss of appetite, dry, itchy skin, persistent puffy eyes, and a frequent need to urinate. If you suspect your kidneys are not alright, better talk to your doctor.

4. Trouble sleeping

Your sleep is closely tied to many aspects of your health, and if you are gaining weight for no apparent reason, the lack of sleep can be the cause of it. Now we know that no one thinks that not sleeping enough can make you get extra pounds, but this is a fact, and you should consider investigating this before thinking about the worst possible causes for your weight gain.

When you are constantly tired because you are not sleeping well, you are also more tired. And when you are more tired, you will not really feel like doing physical activity. Being less active is one of the main reasons you gain weight.

Besides this, your appetite and your cravings might change. You might find yourself wanting to eat foods that are more calorie-rich, and if you go overboard with it, trying to feel better and more energized, this can cause weight gain incredibly fast.

Even more, a bad night’s sleep raises cortisol levels, slowing metabolism and increasing fat storage. The worst part is that this is a cycle. One problem will lead to another, and so on. For example, if you become obese or overweight, sleep apnea might appear, and this will make you sleep even less.

Then if you get sleeping pills prescribed, they can also increase the appetite, and this is how you end up gaining more and more weight and sleeping worse and worse.

5. Thyroid disorder

There are a couple of thyroid disorders out there, but the one that causes weight gain is called hypothyroidism. This is when your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones, and as a result, your metabolism slows down.

This gland plays a big role in regulating your metabolism, and when your metabolism is slowed down, this leads to a decreased rate of calorie burning and, in the end, weight gain that may be regarded as unexplained.

But this is not the only sign of hypothyroidism. In addition to weight gain, as the body’s energy production is impaired, the individuals affected by this condition can feel sluggish and exhausted even after they rest enough.

In addition, stiff joints and aching muscles, constipation, depression, feeling cold, or having dry skin and hair can all be connected to hypothyroidism.

If you want to treat the weight gain due to hypothyroidism, it typically involves treating the underlying thyroid disorder. Once the thyroid hormone levels are stabilized through medication, many of the symptoms, including weight gain, may improve.

If you are struggling with sudden weight gain and you are not able to identify an immediate cause, it’s important to consider all the potential factors. We’ve presented the most common ones, and the best thing you can do is to talk about it with your doctor.

Once you understand the root cause, it’s possible to choose the right way to address the problem, and this can help you fix the weight gain.

This isn’t just about aesthetics, but it’s a clear signal that something in your body might be out of balance. Restoring this balance is essential if you want to live a long and happy life.
