I remember the winter a few years back when I caught every bug. From serious colds to flu, it seemed like I couldn’t shake off the sickness. It was frustrating and exhausting. After that tough season, I decided that I had to make some changes and take proper care of myself. I started searching for ways to naturally boost my immune system, and I was surprised by some of the simple things I discovered. Now, as someone who’s a bit over 40, I feel healthier and more resilient than ever, even during the coldest months of the year.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that taking care of our immune system doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, many of the best strategies are quite straightforward and can be easily integrated into our daily routines. I want to share everything I learned with you because I know how important it is to feel our best, especially when the weather is working against us. 1. Make sure you get enough sleep

You probably heard it before, but getting enough quality sleep is essential for a strong immune system. Our bodies regenerate during sleep, making it the foundation of good health. You should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and try to stick to a regular schedule.

I found it very useful to create a bedtime routine to wind down, I read a book and took warm baths. Also, keeping my bedroom cool and dark helped me a lot to create a cozy environment and achieve a night of quality sleep. Another thing I did was to limit my screen time. At first, it was really hard and a little bit frustrating, but I successfully did it in the end. I can easily say that I no longer feel the need to scroll before bedtime. Blue light is a real enemy of our quality sleep, so we should stay away from it.

2. Drink plenty of water

You already know how important is to drink plenty of water. It’s essential for overall health, including our immune systems. Water helps to flush our toxins and keeps our cells functioning properly. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and more if you are active or live in a dry climate.

I found it useful to always carry a reusable water bottle. I also found out how much I love having a cute bottle. Believe it or not, if I love my bottle I drink significantly more water. Am I crazy? Maybe. But I really encourage you to not go for a boring water bottle and choose a unique one. If you are like me, you will see that drinking the right amount of water is not that hard!

Another thing I learned is the importance of drinking a glass of water before each meal and adding a slice of cucumber for a bit of flavor.

You should focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help your body fight off infections. Here are some immune-boosting foods that helped me a lot during the coldest months of the year:

  • citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits (high in Vitamin C)
  • leafy greens like spinach and kale
  • garlic and ginger for their anti-inflammatory properties
  • yogurt and other fermented foods for probiotics

4. Get moving

Make sure you exercise regularly and stay active. Physical activity can give your immune system a boost. Exercise helps to increase circulation, allowing immune cells to move more freely throughout your body. Try to have at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

A fun way to stay active was to take brisk walks around my neighborhood. I also joined pilates and I’ve never felt better in my life. I connected with my friends and family and tried to always look for the positive part in everything, no matter what I did. I also recommend you engage in a hobby you love and forget about those stressful problems.

It’s important to avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. Since I began to pay more attention to when and how I wash my hands, I noticed a good change in my lifestyle.

I discovered how much I love warm lighting and creating a cozy atmosphere in my house. I bought a lot of fluffy blankets pillows and vanilla candles and I redesigned my living room. Spending the evenings watching TV and drinking hot tea became a new activity I truly love.
