1. Not wearing sunglasses

Do you own a pair of sunglasses? Probably you have more than one pair, but are you using the sunglasses the proper way? Maybe you never forget to apply sunscreen and do it repeatedly every day before you leave your house, but you always forget the sunglasses or only take them when you go to the beach.

Sunscreen is the first line of defense when it comes to aging, but sunglasses come next, and you should never underestimate them. They protect the delicate skin around your eyes from harmful UV rays and minimize the repetitive squinting that can lead to premature wrinkles.

If you are not among those who regularly wear sunglasses, keep in mind that the sun damage will slowly creep up around the thin skin of the lower eyelids. Even more, this is the skin that loses elasticity fairly easily and is also susceptible to skin cancer.

If you don’t know what type of sunglasses to choose if you want to slow down aging, just go with the biggest ones if you feel comfortable with them. They are so amazing because they offer greater coverage, shielding a larger area around the eyes and providing an extra layer of defense against UV damage.

2. Foods that are ultra-processed or too sugary

Ok, most of us know that we should avoid these foods, but many times we know why doctors advise us to do that and also what these foods are. What you eat is not affecting only your waistline but also the way you are aging.

The foods we are talking about are most of the time tasty, and we are used to them. Even more, some are ready to eat, and this is incredibly convenient. Frozen pizzas, breakfast cereals, frozen meals, chicken nuggets, and so on are ultra-processed, and because of this, they have a toll on your health and well-being.

Then we have sugar. It tastes great, but it is aging you form inside it. When the amount of sugar you eat is excessive, it will affect methylation. What is this? Well, this is a process that involves chemical tags on the DNA and has to deal with cellular function. The more sugar you consume and the more time passes by, these tags can accelerate cellular aging, and in the end, you will feel older sooner.

However, sugary foods lead to more than cellular aging. A diet that is high in ultra-processed and sugary foods is bad for heart health, mental well-being, and overall life quality. Now, you can have a sweet treat from time to time, but eating sugar regularly is what can shorten your lifespan.

The solution is to limit these foods as much as possible. There is no magic trick here. For now, this is the only way.

3. Isolation yourself

This is not something that affects you just emotionally. This can also accelerate the aging process and have serious effects on physical health and longevity. There is research out there that tells us how being lonely increases the risk of several age-related health issues, including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and depression.

People simply underestimate the impact social isolation can have on our health, and this only leads to a higher mortality risk. After all, we are social beings, and we need this type of connection in our lives.

But how can being connected to our peers help us look younger and live longer? Well, when you are interacting with others, such as your family, your friends, your neighbors, and so on, this will reduce stress, provide emotional support, and improve cognitive function. And the older you get, the more important these connections become.

Try to incorporate social activities into your routine as much as possible since this is the best way to combat isolation. Volunteering, taking up hobbies like pickleball, joining a local book club, or attending classes at a nearby community center or library are just a few ideas you can try.

4. Sitting too much

You know that being active is a great way to maintain yourself healthy and young. Maybe you exercise every week and try to eat the best food, but what about the time you spend sitting?

No matter if you have a desk job or a hobby that makes you sit for hours in a row, you should do something about it because sitting for prolonged periods can actually make you age faster.

In case you have to sit for more than an hour, you should take regular breaks and simply move around. And there are plenty of ways to do this without disrupting your routine.

First of all, you just need to get up and walk. It is recommended to do that every 30 minutes, but if this is not possible, doing it every 2 hours is also ok. Working while standing up is also a good idea. A standing desk is ideal for this.

5. Losing weight later in life

We know very well that obesity is linked to a lot of health issues, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, but being underweight or losing weight in an unhealthy way can also affect your health.

A 2023 study showed that those who lost weight (from obese to nonobese) later in life between the ages of 40 and 84 looked older than those who were still obese. On the other hand, those who managed to lose weight earlier in life seemed younger than their actual age.

According to the study authors, these results could be related to the idea that later-life weight loss is unintentional and associated with weakness and other health concerns.
