10 Effective Ways to Get Rid of Nose Congestion

February 22, 2024 · Healthy Choices
stuffy-nose

A stuffy noise is a very uncomfortable thing to deal with, especially if it’s accompanied by other issues. Sometimes your nose might get blocked altogether, sometimes it just drips. You can neither inhale nor exhale. You could also feel that your nose is filled with annoying mucus, and there’s just nothing you can do than breathe through your mouth.

Even worse, when you blow your nose, nothing comes out. So how do we really get rid of a stuffy nose? Well, the nose has a vast network of blood vessels with valves that open and close. Whether you get an infection, your nasal nerves get stimulated, which causes your valves to open. This might result in more blood entering the nose. It also causes swelling in your nasal passages that makes your nose runny.

What are the causes of a stuffy nose?

There are many different reasons you might get stuck with a stuffy nose, some of them including:

  • bacterial, viral, and fungal infection
  • common cold
  • sinusitis
  • allergic
  • asthma
  • deviated nasal symptoms
  • nasal polyp

There are also different lines of treatment. Whenever you’re dealing with nasal congestion or any other issues related to stuffy nose symptoms, whether we’re talking about sneezing, fever, or even postnatal drip, if it’s lingering for more than two weeks, you might want to seek medical attention.

But all in all, a stuffy nose could be easily treated with home remedies, at least in its earlier phases. Home remedies and palliative measures could definitely work when it comes to calming the irritated nasal passage. Here’s a list of home remedies that might help you alleviate the issues that come with a stuffy nose:

Steam inhalation

Steam inhalation is definitely one of the most effective home remedies for congestion. It’s also the oldest method to get much-needed relief from irritating nasal congestion. Before, we used to take steam by pouring some hot water in a bowl and just placing a towel on our heads to inhale the steam.

Nowadays, we have technology! There are all kinds of steamers available for steam inhalation. It is also used for beauty purposes, such as facial treatments that are meant to make your face glow. If you also add an antiseptic herb in the steamer, like peppermint seeds, and take the steam 2-3 times a day, it’s even better.

Warm compress

A warm compress will efficiently unclog a stuffy nose by reducing that inflammation and opening the nasal cavity. You can easily apply hot pressure from the outside of your nose. This will help you tremendously. It could also help relieve the inflammation in your nostrils and sinuses, making it much easier to breathe.

Ginger

Ginger is known to have very high anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that will efficiently help reduce the stuffy nose. It’s also highly effective against a clogged one. You can even use ginger as a compressor. If you want to try it, you need to boil 2 cups of water with ginger pieces in it.

Then, soak a fresh washcloth in the brew and place it on your face for 15 minutes, but gently. You can also have ginger tea and drink it three times a day for immediate relief from a stuffy nose.

Honey

Honey is extremely versatile and packs a ton of benefits for all kinds of health conditions, which makes it highly useful for stuffy nose treatment. It’s also a very rich source of powerful nutrients, like vitamins and minerals. It also brings a ton of antibacterial properties that will help you fight whatever bacterial infections you might be dealing with.

Honey can calm your nasal passage, and irritated throat and also clear the excess accumulation of mucus. Only two tablespoons of honey with a cup of lukewarm water can easily clear your clogged nasal passage. You can also add some honey in milk or tea to fully relieve your symptoms.

Garlic

Garlic is probably one of the best sources of antioxidants. It stimulates your immune system by multiplying your white blood cells. It also helps increase the production of antibodies that will efficiently fight against your respiratory issues. You can easily add some garlic cloves or crushed garlic in hot soup at least twice a day.

Grapefruit extract

Grapefruit is a very rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants that can easily boost your immunity. It also contains a very powerful antioxidant known as Quercetin, which works as an anti-allergic agent. For the best results, you want to add a couple of drops of grapefruit extract to warm water and inhale it. The steam of that extract will help you clear your blacked passage right away.

Onion

When it comes to health benefits, onion definitely packs a ton of them, especially due to all the vitamins and antioxidants in it. Remember that strong onion smell? Well, if you smell it for 5 minutes, it can instantly clear your stuffy nose.

Spices

Unlike any other spice out there, black pepper works great with a stuffy nose. You can make a drink of a tablespoon of black pepper and a tablespoon of honey. Then, mix these ingredients and add them to water, and boil them. Drinking this mixture will easily provide immense relief from a stuffy nose.

Apple cider vinegar

All essential nutrients that you will find in apple cider vinegar are needed to get relief from a stuffy nose. It also packs strong antibacterial and antifungal properties. Just mix 2 teaspoons of Cider vinegar with some warm water and drink it 3 times a day. You can also add a tablespoon of honey to the drink.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water in different forms, whether it’s juice or soup can be highly beneficial to reduce your stuffed nose. These things will help thin the mucus in your nasal passages, but also push the fluids out of your nose and decrease the pressure in your sinuses.

Stop that runny nose in 5 minutes!

If you’re looking for fast and efficient ways to unclog your nose right away, you’ll be happy to know that we found a series of things you can do that will DEFINITELY work for you, too:

  • drink warm water – Sip on a glass of warm water, but very slowly. This will help soothe the irritation in your nasal passages and also reduce the runny nose.
  • nasal irrigation – Using a saline nasal spray or even a neti pot, just rinse your nasal passages with saline solution. It will help clean the mucus and irritants, providing the much-needed relief you’re looking for.
  • acupressure – Gently press your fingers on the side of your nose close to the nostrils, and hold for a while. It will help release nasal congestion.
  • peppermint oil – Apply a small amount of diluted peppermint essential oil on the sides of your nose. You might feel a nice, cooling sensation, and also helps stop a runny nose.
  • spicy foods – Eating spicy foods such as hot peppers and horseradish will temporarily clear your nasal passages and reduce congestion thanks to all that capsaicin content. Why not enjoy a small amount of spicy food for some quick relief!

However, it’s worth mentioning that these methods will only provide you a temporary relief. If your runny nose persists or you also have other severe symptoms, then it’s highly recommended to consult a healthcare professional.
